Navantia, through its centre of excellence Navantia COEX Advanced Manufacturing, has begun manufacturing an innovative prototype module for Point Defense Systems on ships at its Puerto Real facilities. The module has been conceived from the design stage using advanced manufacturing processes and new materials.

The objective of this project, developed at the facilities of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (CFA), is to enhance system performance while simultaneously strengthening key aspects such as safety, maintenance, quality, cost, versatility and sustainability.

Designed following a plug-and-play approach, the module allows for swift installation on ships already in service, providing additional capabilities in a fast and efficient manner. Its self-supporting structure also facilitates both storage in arsenals and onboard integration within short timeframes, simplifying deployment processes.

The final design is the result of the use of innovative materials and new manufacturing techniques that enable the adoption of complex and disruptive geometries that are difficult to achieve using traditional methods. In particular, the use of advanced polymers offers greater design freedom and enables a highly optimised solution. The result is a lightweight and innovative module, with an estimated weight reduction of 40% compared to solutions based on conventional materials and processes.

The manufacture of this prototype is the first project produced at the CFA facilities using CEAD’s large-format 3D printer, marking a milestone for both Navantia and the Spanish industry.
