Navantia has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its digital twin of an air‑cooling system, a development that incorporates advanced artificial intelligence models. This represents a significant milestone in the field of naval digitalisation, recognising the maturity of the public company’s engineering, data and machine‑learning practices.

The digital twin has been developed by Navantia’s Innovation Directorate and forms part of a corporate approach that strongly promotes the use of digital twins and advanced artificial intelligence techniques across different areas of the business. This approach will be applied and deployed through the Navantia COEX Digital Twin Centre of Excellence, reinforcing the role of the Navantia COEX network as an enabling structure for the industrial adoption of advanced technologies and as a hub for capability and talent development.

The solution enables the monitoring of the operational behaviour of an air‑cooling system and the real‑time assessment of its health status. To achieve this, it uses data‑driven algorithms and machine‑learning techniques that allow early anomaly detection, as well as the generation of operational alerts and maintenance recommendations.

The assessment carried out by Lloyd’s Register analysed in detail Navantia’s development activities, technical governance, ML DevOps methodologies, data management, and the verification and validation processes applied by the company. According to the certification body, Navantia has demonstrated structured and disciplined practices for the development and operationalisation of advanced algorithms, supported by documented workflows and the use of appropriate tools.

Approval in Principle represents an initial formal recognition of Navantia’s digital twin approach and confirms that there are no conceptual or lifecycle management barriers preventing progress towards higher levels of certification.

With this achievement, Navantia consolidates its position as a benchmark in Digital Twins for naval systems, strengthening its value proposition to enhance capabilities and improve the operational availability of current and future naval programmes.
