Fleet Solid Support
At 216 metres in length, the Fleet Solid Support is the Royal Navy’s logistics giant: it carries essential munitions, spare parts and supplies, operates Merlin or Wildcat helicopters from its large flight deck and uses cranes and automated systems to replenish ships at sea without interrupting operations.
The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Navantia UK the design and construction of three Fleet Solid Support ships, a cornerstone of the future Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Navantia SA’s experience ensures quality control, advanced logistics and “know‑how” transfer from Spain.
Three 216‑metre ships for strategic resupply At 216 metres long, these solid “logistics giants” will supply munitions, spare parts and provisions to the UK’s carrier strike groups, enabling extended naval operations without returning to port. Their flight decks will accommodate Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, expanding vertical replenishment capacity at sea.
£1.6‑billion contract boosts naval industry The FSS programme mobilises a historic investment that strengthens the UK’s security, ensures on‑time delivery and maximises value for taxpayers through competitive and sustainable industrial processes.
Team Resolute: a strategic alliance for shipbuilding sovereignty Navantia, Harland & Wolff and BMT have created Team Resolute, a synergy designed to meet the goals of the National Shipbuilding Strategy Refresh. The consortium combines British engineering, Irish production capacity and Spanish technological leadership, paving the way for future exports.
Knowledge transfer, jobs and social value Navantia UK leads an ambitious training plan that will enhance local skills in advanced welding, 3D design and digital lifecycle management. The FSS will create 1,000 direct jobs in Belfast and another 800 across the national supply chain, with 120 high‑value engineering roles at BMT, contributing to Levelling Up and regional economic revitalisation.
