F110, the 21st Century Frigate
In 1996, Navantia began the design of the F-100 frigate. More than 20 years later, with 13 ships built from this family in different versions for several countries (Spain, Norway, and Australia), the innovative and new F110 frigate aims to maintain Navantia’s global leadership as a designer and builder of frigates and their subsequent life cycle support. The F-110 is a multipurpose platform that represents a technological leap toward the intelligent ship. It incorporates Industry 4.0 technologies that will improve construction, operation, and the life cycle.
Navantia has successfully developed 5 national and international programs, including the current F-110 for Spain, totaling 17 ships.

Their high capabilities and flexibility to operate both in coastal areas and on the high seas allow them to act as command and control ships in operations with allied fleets, providing the necessary coverage. Navantia is a world leader in the design and construction of frigates, having built the F-100 for the Spanish Navy, as well as ships for the Norwegian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. It is currently developing the F-110 frigate program for the Spanish Navy.
With all this experience gained, and always maintaining a common design strategy, Navantia has defined a family of frigates of different sizes and adapted to the most demanding scenarios and missions. This design strategy aims to maximize ship survivability. Navantia’s various frigate designs cover a range from just over 2,200 tons displacement to ships above 6,000 tons, adapting the capabilities and performance of their different systems to the size and missions of the vessel.

Navantia has signed an FOTS (Follow-on Technical Support) agreement with the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organization (NDLO) to support the Life Cycle of the Norwegian Nansen-class (F-310) frigates.
Currently, as the designer, builder, and developer of the systems of these frigates, resulting from the evolution of the F-100 project, Navantia provides various services, including: Maintenance and development of new functionalities of the IPMS (Integrated Platform Management System); Obsolescence reports on systems and components; Supply of spare parts and repair of elements; Technical assistance for scheduled maintenance tasks, especially in propulsion systems; Design and implementation of new functionalities during refits; Management of design databases. Navantia carries out these tasks with a high level of customer satisfaction regarding quality and deadlines, as a result of which the initial agreement signed in 2013 was renewed in 2017 for a similar duration.
It also provides life cycle support for the 5 frigates of the Spanish Navy and sustainment activities for the 3 Australian DDGs (AWD).
Navantia’s development in ship design was accompanied by its qualification as a combat systems integrator and supplier of comprehensive solutions, acquired mainly as a result of the F-100 frigate program.
Navantia has succeeded in creating and evolving a national solution for the critical systems of the Spanish Navy’s ships and projecting it into export products. Thus, the Integrated Platform Control System (SICP), the SCOMBA Command and Control System, CATIZ (the export variant of SCOMBA), the Dorna Fire Control Systems, and the NAVCOM / Hermesys Integrated Communications System are consolidated products since their incorporation into the F-100 class frigate configuration.
