Advanced naval defence with versatile capabilities

F110, the 21st-century frigate

Navantia began designing the F-100 frigate in 1996. More than 20 years later, and with 13 ships of this family built in different versions for several countries (Spain, Norway and Australia), the innovative new F110 aims to maintain Navantia's global leadership as a frigate designer and builder, also providing lifecycle support. The F-110 is a multipurpose platform representing a technological leap towards the smart ship. It incorporates Industry 4.0 technologies that improve construction, operation and lifecycle management.

Navantia has successfully developed 5 national and international programmes, including the current F-110 for Spain, totalling 17 ships.

The F-110 is a multipurpose platform representing a technological leap towards the smart ship. It incorporates Industry 4.0 technologies that improve construction, operation and lifecycle management.

Their high capabilities and flexibility to operate both in coastal areas and on the high seas allow them to act as command and control ships in operations with allied fleets, providing the necessary coverage. Navantia is a global leader in the design and construction of frigates, having built the F-100 for the Spanish Navy, as well as ships for the Norwegian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. It is currently developing the F-110 frigate programme for the Spanish Navy.

Drawing on this experience and a common design approach, Navantia has developed a family of frigates in different sizes, tailored to demanding operational scenarios and missions. This approach prioritises ship survivability. Navantia’s designs range from just over 2,200 tonnes to more than 6,000 tonnes displacement, with systems and performance tailored to each vessel’s size and mission profile.

Navantia is renowned for its expertise in frigate construction. Over the last 20 years, it has successfully developed 5 programmes, including the current F-110 for Spain, totalling 17 ships. Drawing on this wealth of experience and maintaining a consistent design philosophy, Navantia has developed a family of frigates in different sizes, tailored to the most demanding operational scenarios and missions.

This design strategy aims to maximise ship survivability. Navantia’s various frigate designs cover a range from just over 2,200 tonnes displacement to ships above 6,000 tonnes, adapting the capabilities and performance of their different systems to the vessel’s size and missions.

Navantia has signed an FOTS (Follow-on Technical Support) agreement with the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation (NDLO) to support the Life Cycle of the Norwegian Nansen-class (F-310) frigates.

Today, as the designer, builder and developer of the systems for these frigates, which evolved from the F-100 programme, Navantia provides a range of services, including: Maintenance and development of new functionalities of the IPMS (Integrated Platform Management System); Obsolescence reports on systems and components; Supply of spare parts and repair of elements; Technical assistance for scheduled maintenance tasks, especially in propulsion systems; Design and implementation of new functionalities during refits; Management of design databases. Navantia delivers these activities to a high standard, consistently meeting customer expectations for quality and delivery times. This led to the renewal of the initial agreement, signed in 2013, for a similar term in 2017.

It also provides life cycle support for the five frigates of the Spanish Navy and sustainment activities for the three Australian DDGs (AWD).

Navantia’s development of its ship design capabilities went hand in hand with the development of its expertise in combat systems integration and end-to-end solutions, acquired mainly as a result of the F-100 frigate programme.

Navantia has developed and evolved a home-grown solution for the critical systems of Spanish Navy vessels, subsequently adapting it into products for export. As a result, the Integrated Platform Control System (SICP), SCOMBA Combat Management System, CATIZ (SCOMBA’s export variant), Dorna Fire-Control Systems and the NAVCOM/Hermesys Integrated Communications System are all well-established solutions, proven through their deployment aboard the F-100-class frigates.
