Navantia Group

A solid structure serving the global naval industry.

Innovation and success at every step

Navantia is a global benchmark, both for its products and for its technology and systems. Since the 1980s, when it made the technological leap from importing designs to exporting its products and designs to some of the world’s most advanced countries, it has built up many success stories along the way. These successful projects are the result of the talent, teamwork and dedication of past and present employees who, together with our partners, suppliers and customers, have made them a reality.

Navantia is the heir to a long naval tradition alongside the Spanish Navy. Although shipbuilding dates back to even earlier times, in 1717 the General Intendant of the Navy, José Patiño, ordered the construction of the first modern shipyard in Spain: the Royal Arsenal of La Carraca. This was followed by the Cartagena shipyards in 1731 and Ferrol in 1750. These military arsenals witnessed historic milestones such as the development of major ships of the line in the 18th century, the first mechanically propelled vessels and the world’s first electrically powered submarine, the "Isaac Peral".

In 1908, the Cartagena and Ferrol shipyards were integrated into the Sociedad de Construcción Naval, popularly known as "La Naval". After the Spanish Civil War, the State took control of the military arsenals and created Bazán in 1947. In the early 21st century, Bazán and Astilleros Españoles merged to form IZAR, which was later split, giving rise to Navantia in 2005. Today, Navantia is a benchmark in the naval industry, leading technological innovation in the defence sector, driving cutting‑edge technologies and maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability.

Corvettes for Saudi Arabia: Strengthening Defence

In December 2024, Navantia signed a contract with the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defence for the construction of three new Avante 2200 corvettes. This project, to be carried out at the San Fernando shipyard, includes delivery of the first unit by Navantia, while the remaining two will be completed in Saudi Arabia. The corvettes are designed for patrol, rescue and protection of strategic assets, and incorporate advanced technologies such as the HAZEM combat system and the HERMESYS integrated communications system. This contract will create around 2,000 jobs and strengthen the Royal Saudi Navy’s defence capabilities.
