Since 1974, the Cartagena Shipyard realizes the Great Careenings of the submarines of the Spanish Navy, a process that consists in inspecting the good condition of all the equipment and materials of the submersibles and in repairing those that require it.
In Navantia Cartagena, there have been about thirty Great Carenas. These have been done in the four submarines of the S-60 class, as well as in the submersibles of the S-70 class. At this moment, the fifth careen of the S-71 Galerna is being made.
The Great Careenings are operations of a great magnitude, require around two years of work during which they disassemble, travel and assemble around 10,000 teams. For this, it employs around 300 professionals from both Navantia and the auxiliary industry, belonging to different areas of work.

Navantia has been immersed, for more than 90 years, in a process of evolution and improvement of the design, production and life cycle of submarines. During this period, different kinds of submersibles have been built in their shipyards, integrating the most complex systems with the collaboration of national and international partners.
Delivery: 1921-1926 Number of Vessels: 6 They were the first to be built at the Cartagena Shipyard, based on the Holand submarines of the Electric Boat Company of the United States.
Delivery: 1927-1929 Number of Vessels: 6 They were also based on the North American Holland design, although with slight variations.
Delivery: 1944-1952 Number of Vessels: 3 This submarine is a first attempt of the industry to carry out a national design and construction.
Delivery: 1963-1964 Number of Vessels: 2 Based on a German design, they were considered assault submarines and were less than 14 meters in length. The problems that they generated and their poor military value, it was advisable to remove them from service in 1969.
Delivery: 1964-1965 Number of Vessels: 2 Based on the design of the German Type Hai, they were a little larger than "Seal" kind (18.8 meters in length) and capable of carrying two torpedoes.
Delivery: 1973-1975 Number of Vessels: 4 Constructed with French design, with a characteristic bow bulb they receive the names of marine animals: Dolphin, Tonina, Marsopa and Narval. These are already almost sixty meters long and have a crew of 56 people.
Delivery: 1973-1975 Number of Vessels: 4 Also with French design (Galerna, Siroco, Mistral and Tramontana), three remain active, since only the Siroco has been decommissioned, in June of the year 2012.
Delivery: 2005-Present Number of Vessels: 10 Born as a Hispano-French project to supply two ships to Chile, manufactured between France (bow) and Spain (stern). The same collaboration formula was used for the delivery of two other submarines to Malaysia. Currently 6 more submarines are being built for India, in this case in the MDL shipyards in Bombay.
