History of MAV (Marine Action Vessel)

The Maritime Action Vessel (MAV) program is originated from the need of replacement of a Spanish Navy vessels group with very heterogeneous characteristics, mainly dedicated to surveillance and patrol tasks which was close to the end of its useful life.

The creation process begins with a close collaboration between the Spanish Navy and Navantia, working jointly and simultaneously in the requirement definition and their technical consolidation. The common goal was to achieve ships with high performance, high degree of homogeneity, as well as a high level of versatility, a high standard of habitability for the crew and a low cost of both acquisition and maintenance.

The final result is a moderate size ship, with, compared to other ships, high performance and great versatility regarding missions,  both in acquisition cost and reduced life cycle.

On July 31, 2006 the Spanish Navy and Navantia signed the Execution Order for the manufacture of 4 MAV. The last of these units was delivered in 2012.  Likewise, on August 1, 2014, the construction of 2 more units was authorized, delivered in 2018.

The Maritime Action Vessel (MAV) has a moderate size, a reduced endowment and a high level of habitability and permanence at sea, with great versatility in terms of the missions to be carried out, a high level of commonality with other vessels and a reduced cost.
